Here Begins in Pittsburgh, PA, USA

The sprouts of CLOH.Org began in an organizational institution in a certain city with influences from afar. The first hurdle is a local one. Let's inject coaching perspectives into the sports development process that is to occur in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh landscape from river view

Coaches and athletes know that: in the end, you make you who you are. Coaches are skilled in the development of people. Coaches and athletes understand that the influence of the surroundings are important factors.

Sports becomes a setting or an arena where people are apt to change, to develop perhaps, to strive and to touch nerve-endings and feelings. Let's coach Pittsburgh!

As a city, in the end, Pittsburgh makes Pittsburgh what it is.

Every city, it seems, carries within itself the key to its own happiness, growth and fulfillment. The greatest purpose that Sport can serve is to help us find that key. You won't find it merely by looking, or even by measuring yourself "cup by cup." You must be willing to dive on in, knowing that the key (the "pearl") is buried beneath hours, miles, tons and years of hard, hard work. In the athletic arena we struggle, fall, fail, doubt, redouble our efforts, and if we perservere, in time we achieve. Sport is at its best when we work at it and, simultaneously, work on ourselves.

In the mirror of athletics, we see ourselves! If we choose to face the challenge that sport issues, we must ask:

  • Who am I?
  • How can I best express that?
  • How can I develop it?
  • How do I want to be?
  • What do I need to do to be that?
  • Am I ready and willing to do it -- to seize every opportunity, deal with each failure and accept every challenge?

The questions are simple, not complex. But the work indicated in a positive response, a passionate yes to each and every charge, the work you are called to do, may be extremely difficult.

You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true -- you may have to work at it however.
Richard Bach

When you choose the path of success, you choose to work. But the value of the work is evident --- when we pick some goal and work toward its achievement, it is really ourselves we are working on. Picking that path and sticking to it, is an admirable and rewarding choice. Persevering in the pursuit is always its own reward!

"What lies before us and what lies behind us are but tiny matters compared with what lies within us."
Unknown

The exercise of this position paper is designed to help us all discover what lies within Pittsburgh. It is rich, deep and fertile. It is our greatest strength as we face the challenges ahead.
