Chronicle of Higher Education, (August 9, 2002): portals are becoming a top priority for many insitutions.
Portal development is headed to the top of their list of priorities.
Portals rank fourth among the top 10 information-technology-related issues that college technology administrators expect to become much more significant in the coming
year.
Officials at the University at Buffalo credit their portal with
student retention, in part because the system automatically notifies
students about tuition and other bills, avoiding problems later. Other
institutions reported that their portal projects exposed inaccuracies
and other problems with online information that otherwise would have
gone unnoticed.
Linux started as a kernel. The early Linux code could fit on the back of a poster. Today, Linux has grown and turned into thousands of packages, let alone lines of code. If you deviate from this tree and decide to go it on your own, you are responsible for maintaining updates now for thousands of packages and millions of lines of code. Let me know how that works out for you.
